It is Week 16 of the regular season and the playoffs are right around the corner. So I’m going to take a large chunk of my time to break down all 32 teams in the NFL in a power rankings completely based off of my opinion and research.
Note: I based the biggest wins and losses not just off their physical score, but also, the importance of the win or loss.
- Arizona Cardinals
Biggest Win Week 13 @ Packers (20-17)
Biggest Loss Week 7 vs. Broncos (45-10)
Reasons for Excitement as fan There’s one thing about being the worst team in football, you get to pick number 1 overall in the upcoming draft. The Cards could trade back a bit and take a cornerstone left tackle or stay at 1 and add a dominating pass rusher to match Chandler Jones. Other than that, Pat Pete is still one of the best at his position and despite my opinion of him, Chosen Rosen is well, Chosen to be the franchise QB of this team. That combination of Rosen and Kirk will be very, very good into the future.
- Oakland Raiders
Biggest Win Week 14 vs. Steelers (24-21)
Biggest Loss Week 9 @ 49ers (34-3)
Reasons for Excitement as fan I get why fans would be upset, the 2 best players have been traded away and the team has gone to shit this season. But, trust what Gruden is doing. The picks are stock piled up and the first of the three first rounders this season can get you a Nick Bosa or a Ed Oliver that are so good, fans will forget a bit about Khalil Mack. Throw in the fact that they have their franchise QB to go along with all those picks, and there’s a future in Oakland. Trust Gruden Oakland fans.
- San Francisco 49ers
Biggest Win Week 15 vs. Seahawks (26-23)
Biggest Loss Week 13 @ Seahawks (43-16)
Reasons for Excitement as fan This 49ers team has very simple reasons to be excited. Jimmy G will be coming back with some very solid pieces around him, the defense is a solid group, especially on the defensive line, and another top 5 pick will be on its way. This 49ers team was a healthier season away from competing in the Wild Card this year. San Fran fans, there’s a division title coming to this team, in the very near future.
- Jacksonville Jaguars
Biggest Win Week 2 vs. Patriots (31-20)
Biggest Loss Week 6 @ Cowboys (40-7)
Reasons for Excitement as fan This team is one season removed from competing for an AFC Championship. I know this season did nothing, outside of a win against the Pats, to remind fans of that, but that defensive core still remains there. The offense just had no rhythm this season and management’s answer to that was benching and giving up on Blake Bortles. That clearly was not the problem. This squad will be taking a QB in this upcoming draft, if Justin Herbert doesn’t come out, it’ll be Dwayne Haskins, who I am super high on (who if he’s smart will come out). This team could bounce back really quick, or it could take some time. This is my first real question mark on this list of what there is to be excited about in the near future because some of the young stars seem very frustrated.
- New York Jets
Biggest Win Week 1 @ Lions (48-17)
Biggest Loss Week 10 vs. Bills (41-10)
Reasons for Excitement as fan Sam Darnold. Jamal Adams. Marcus Maye. Leonard Williams. The young core of players that the Jets have now centered their team around. Darnold is the QB of the future (even though I’m not super high on him) and the other 3 will anchor that defense for years to come. Build the offensive line in the draft and free agency to help Darnold and the Jets will be taking off (HA, get it?).
- Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Biggest Win Week 1 @ Saints (48-40)
Biggest Loss Week 4 @ Bears (48-10)
Reasons for Excitement as fan Ummmmm, Jameis Winston and Mike Evans??? This Bucs team is very strange. They have a solid defense and some good pieces on offense and realistically, the inconsistency of the QB position is the reason why this team isn’t fighting for a Wild Card spot. So, I guess that’s the thing to be excited about? Some more consistent QB play in the future.
- Detroit Lions
Biggest Win Week 3 vs. Patriots (26-10)
Biggest Loss Week 1 vs. Jets (48-17)
Reasons for Excitement as fan This is another team lost in the middle ground. They’re a team that’s talented enough to be fighting for the playoffs but weren’t consistent enough this season to be there. But, unlike the other teams in this bottom section, there’s not a lot of youth on this team to get overly excited about. A healthier season from this Lions team and they can compete with anybody, but there’s nothing in particular that I can directly point to this season that should excite fans, but hey, a top 10 pick is always exciting.
- New York Giants
Biggest Win Week 13 vs. Bears (30-27)
Biggest Loss Week 15 vs. Titans (17-0)
Reasons for Excitement as fan I hate to say it as a Cowboy fan, but Giants fans have a lot to be excited about for the future. Odell and Barkley are going to be nightmares for opposing defenses for a long time. With that said, they still have work to do on the offensive line and they have a decision to make on finding their QB of the future in this draft or the next draft because Eli is definitely in his final years. But, I’m not going to forget that this team were supposed to be a Championship caliber contender and instead, were greatly disappointing.
- Buffalo Bills
Biggest Win Week 3 @ Vikings (27-6)
Biggest Loss Week 1 @ Ravens (47-3)
Reasons for Excitement as fan A man who has big hands, is really tall, and looks great in shorts. Josh Allen is a QB that the Bills Mafia can get behind. This team still has a lot to build on, but they’ve finally got the guy to build it all around.
- Cincinnati Bengals
Biggest Win Week 2 vs. Ravens (34-23)
Biggest Loss Week 10 vs. Saints (51-14)
Reasons for Excitement as fan Here’s another team in that middle ground between playoff contender and top 10 pick in the draft. Cincy could’ve fell in either territory this season but they managed to, in typical Marvin Lewis fashion, be just good enough to not be good enough. There’s still a younger core on the team and Joe Mixon is a real knockout of a player.
- Atlanta Falcons
Biggest Win Week 9 @ Redskins (38-14)
Biggest Loss Week 10 @ Browns (28-16)
Reasons for Excitement as fan 2 years ago this same exact team was a half away from winning the Super Bowl. The only difference was Shanahan leaving as the OC. Since then, the high-powered Falcons offense can’t score in the redzone. Fans should be excited for the future because this team still has the recipe to compete with any team in the league. I wouldn’t be surprised if they were a conference championship contender again as soon as next year.
- Green Bay Packers
Biggest Win Week 10 vs. Dolphins (31-12)
Biggest Loss Week 9 @ Patriots (31-17)
Reasons for Excitement as fan New Head Coach Aaron Rodgers has big things in store for this team. Plenty to be excited for if you’re a cheese head. The Packers will always be competitive, even if this season, Aaron Rodgers personable ass didn’t get his team to the playoffs.
- Denver Broncos
Biggest Win Week 7 @ Cardinals (45-10)
Biggest Loss Week 5 @ Jets (34-16)
Reasons for Excitement as fan The defense is very exciting to watch, especially the pass rush and it’s anchored by Von Miller and young stud, Bradley Chubb. Philip Lindsay is the breakout story of the year after going undrafted and now being one of the best backs in the league. Keenum is a slightly above average QB that I happen to love watching, but I anticipate the Broncos take a QB in this year’s draft to start preparing for the end of Keenum’s contract.
